The Sacred Heart Eagle Girls’ Basketball team had a great first half, but their overtime game on Thursday seemed to take a lot out of the girls in the second half as the Mayer-Lutheran Crusaders used a 17-0 run in the second half to pull away for a 57-41 victory in the Minnesota State Class A Girls Basketball consolation semi-finals at the Ganglehoff Center on the campus of Concordia-St. Paul in St. Paul.
FIRST HALF –
Mayer-Lutheran started the game with the hot hand as they took an 8-3 lead with a pair of three-pointers from Clara Keavney and two free throws from Avery Arvig. Sacred Heart’s Lexi Lawrence stopped the run with a basket and after a Mayer Lutheran basket, the Eagles answered with five points after a Lawrence basket and a Leah Sundby three-pointer to get within an 11-10 deficit. Mayer Lutheran responded with five straight points for a 16-10 lead only to have Sacred Heart respond with an 8-0 run with Lawrence scoring five points and Lydia Riskey making a three-pointer for an 18-16 lead with 7:27 left in the half. The game was tied at 20, 22, and 25 before Mayer Lutharn made the final basket of the half for a 27-25 lead going into halftime.
SECOND HALF –
The teams exchanged baskets early on and Mayer Lutheran led 33-31 when they went on a 17-0 run over the next six minutes. Fueling the Crusader run was Isabelle Keavney with seven points, Clara Keavney and Arvig with four points apiece and two poings from Hallie Hunter for a 50-31 lead with 10:23 remaining. Sacred Heart’s Lawrence stopped the run with a basket and Finley Horken followed with a three-pointer to get within a 50-36 deficit with seven minutes to go. That would be as close as the Eagles would get the rest of the game and Coach Brian Loe got all the players in the game in the final minutes, including the two seniors, Anna Kaiser and Rose Votava as Mayer Lutheran won the game 57-41.
Sacred Hear’s season comes to an end with a 24-8 record. Mayer Lutheran improves to 27-4 on the year and will play Walker-Hackensack-Akeley in the Consolation Championship game on Saturday.
