MACKINAC ISLAND, MI, May 28, 2025 ~ U.S. Senators Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) and Gary Peters (D-MI) spoke to WJR during the Mackinac Policy Conference about why they think it’s important to push for bipartisanship, particularly during the Trump administration.
“Right now, most Michiganders would probably agree that we’ve got people on the far right and the far left who are very loud,” Slotkin told WJR. “But the average Michigander, you know, 80% live in that middle where they’re not going to scream on the internet, they’re not going to come protest your house, (or) follow you home. They just want government to work (and) Democrats and Republicans to act like adults because they have to act like adults when they go to work, get things done, and have our government function efficiently.“

(CONTINUED) “All of the legislation I’ve been able to pass is bipartisan,” Peters added. “I always get a Republican to co-lead with me, and normally several Republicans to join several Democrats together. You build that coalition and you get things done. I will tell you, it’s getting a little harder to do that, given what’s happening in Congress, but it still can be done.“
