MACKINAC ISLAND, MI, May 29, 2025 ~ Michigan gubernatorial candidate and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced his plan for the state’s education system, which he would implement if elected.

During a Wednesday night speech at the Mackinac Policy Conference, he said that he would invest $4.5 billion as governor to overhaul the education system, including creating new programs for reading comprehension, rebooting career technical educational programs, and firing underperforming superintendents and principals. “I could try to win trifectas, or I could try to build solutions,” Duggan said. “Here’s the principles: I want to increase the school budget without raising taxes, I want to fund early reading, I want to rebuild the CTE program, and I want to hold principals and superintendents accountable. Now look at that list and tell me, which thing would Republicans or Democrats disagree with? There’s nothing partisan about this. This is something both sides could agree on, and this is what I want to do.
