MSU Settles Financially with Three Shooting Victims

EAST LANSING, June 10, 2025 ~ Three victims who survived the Feb. 13, 2023 shooting on the campus of Michigan State University officially settled with a $29.75 million lawsuit Tuesday, according to Grewal Law and Gruel Mills Nims & Pylman Attorneys.

Nathan Statly, who suffered a traumatic brain injury, will be paid $14.25 million while Yukai “John” Hao will receive $13 million plus after being left paralyzed from the tragedy. Hao will also receive free tuition plus room and board until completion of his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from MSU. Troy Furbush agreed upon a $2.5 million settlement after going through surgery and follow-up therapy.

(CONTINUED) Two other victims, Hangyang Tao and Guadalupe Huapilla-Perez, have yet to seek damages, as conversations are ongoing with the school according to Detroit-based attorney Ven Johnson.

MSU settled with the families of deceased victims Brian Fraser, Arielle Anderson, and Alexandria Verner in January 2024. Each estate received $5 million.
