
The Crookston American Legion Post 20 Baseball team had seven hits, but couldn’t get a timely hit as they fell to Mayville/Portland in the semi-finals of bracket play at the Grand Forks Tournament on Sunday.
FIRST INNING-
Mayville/Portland had a one-out single before the next two batters were retired.
Crookston’s first two batters were retired before Jay Reese singled to right field. Gavyn Hlucny singled before the next batter popped out and the inning was over.
SECOND INNING-
Mayville/Portland’s first batter of the inning reached on an error and after a groundout, they singled and scored a run on an error. The next batter knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
Crookston’s Nolan Cassavant and Blake Melsa walked with one out before Tony Elbinger singled to score a run to bring Post 20 within a 2-1 deficit.
THIRD INNING –
Mayville/Portland responded with a single and after the second out of the inning they, singled again to score a run for a 3-1 lead.
Crookston’s Parker Kelly singled before the next batter struckout. Parker Kelly singled before he was caught stealing. The next batter flew out and Crookston’s threat was over.
FOURTH INNING-
Mayville/Portland singled with one out before the next two batters grounded out.
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.
FIFTH INNING-
Mayville-Portland led off the inning with a single before two groundouts. The next batter singled to score a run for a 4-1 lead.
Crookston’s Elbinger was hit by a pitch The next batter hit into a fielder’s choice for the second out of the inning. Contreras walked, but the next batter grounded out.
SIXTH INNING-
The first two Mayville/Portland batters were retired before a walk and a single scored another run.
Crookston’s Teagen Lubinski was hit by a pitch and Nolan Cassavant singled to right field. The next two batters were retired.
SEVENTH INNING-
Mayville/Portland reached on an error with one out. The next batter hit into a wild play.
The first two Crookston batters were retired before Contreras singled, but the next batter grounded out and the game was over.
Crookston drops to 4-5 on the year and will travel to Win-E-Mac on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
