Wow…What an end to the spring sports season!! Congratulations to the Red Lake County Rebel Baseball team on winning the Class A State Baseball Championship at Target Field on Saturday.
Red Lake County was dominate in the first round game as they took on #4 seed Legacy Christian Academy. It was scoreless after three innings, but the Rebels scored a run in the fourth inning and added five more runs in the fifth inning. Red Lake County added four more runs in the seventh inning and cruised to a 10-0 victory. They had 13 hits in the game and were led by Colin Taggart who went 4 for 4 with 3 rbi. Kegan Schmitz was 2 for 5 with 2 rbi, and a run. On the mound, Will Gieseke went 6.2 innings while only allowing two hits, striking out seven and not walking a batter.
In the semi-finals, Red Lake County took on #1 seed and #1 ranked Parkers Prairie. Once again, the Rebels took an early lead with a Kegan Schmitz double to score a run in the top of the first inning. Parkers Prairie scored two runs in the fourth inning, but Red Lake County bounced back with a run on a Gieseke single to tie the game at 2-2. The Rebels added another run in the sixth inning when Schmitz tripled and scored on a Brock Seeger single for a 3-2 lead. Parkers Prairie scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings. It had been raining for most of the game and the rain started coming down harder and they got a scoreless eighth inning in before they decided to put the tarps on and pause the game as water was pooling in the infield. After about 30 minutes, the MSHSL announced they were canceling the third place and consolation championship games. Yeah…the people that say the things they do are for the kids……but they basically told the kids we don’t care about anything but the state championship game.
The MSHSL makes that announcement, then says pack up your bags because we are going to finish the game in Alexandria (where they had less rain and an artificial turf infield). So Rock Ridge, who was sticking around waiting for the third place game is handed medals and the third place trophy and told thanks for coming out. At the same time, the teams hit the busses and head towards Alexandria. The teams and media/staff/etc all get to the ball park and they start the ninth inning of play.
In the top of the ninth inning, the first two Red Lake County batters are retired before Schmitz blasts a line drive over the left fielder’s head for a double. Brock Seeger hit a hard ground ball to the short stop and the throw to first base was dropped and Seeger was safe at first. Schmitz never stopped running and rounded third base. When Parkers Prairie finally realized Schmitz never stopped running and was heading home, it was too late and Red Lake County scored a run for a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, There was one out and runners at first and second base. It didn’t look good for Red Lake County, until there was a ground ball to the third baseman Owen Chervestad who scooped up the ball and stepped on third base to get the out and fired a laser to first base to turn the double play to win the game in about as exciting fashion as you could as for!
The Rebels were led by Colin Taggart who was 3 for 3 (now 7 for 7 in the state tournament), Kegan Schmitz was 3 for 5, 2 runs, rbi, and Gunnar Halverson who was 2 for 5. Ben Gullingsrud went eight innings and scattered eight hits and three runs. He walked three and struck out one, but the win went to Boe Nelson who went one inning, didn’t allow a hit and walked one while hitting one batter.
Red Lake County wasn’t done writing the story of an amazing season. They advance to the State Championship game and take on New Ulm Cathedral.
The Rebels didn’t mess around. They scored five runs in the top of the first inning with Gieseke starting the game with a double, Gunnar Halvorson reached on fielding error and Gullingsrud blasted a fly ball over the right fielder’s head on a one-hopper to the fence for a triple and a 2-0 lead. Schmitz flew out to right field to knock in a run. Seeger walked and Taggart was hit by a pitch. Owen Chervestad reached on an error that allowed a run to score for a 4-0 lead. Another run scored on a wild pitch and the Rebels led 5-0. Red Lake County added four more runs in the second inning, two runs in the third, two more in the fourth and two in the seventh inning and they cruised to a 15-7 victory to win the championship in impressive fashion.
The Rebels were led by Schmitz going 3 for 4 and a state championship game tying record of six runs batted in! Halverson was 2 for 3 with 3 runs and 2 rbi, Gieseke was 2 for 4 with 3 runs, and a walk. Gullingsrud was 2 for 5 with 3 runs and 2 rbi, and Cheverstad was 2 for 5, with 2 rbi and a run. It was Gieseke once again that picked up the win going 6.2 innings and scattering nine hits, seven runs (5 earned), he struck out six and walked two.
Here is a team that had to win two championship games in the Section tournament just to get to state and then was lights out in the state tournament, just like Fosston two seasons prior.
This is the second Section 8A team in the last three seasons to win the state title and Sacred Heart finished third place last year. What a run it has been for the northwest Minnesota teams and there is no reason a Section 8A team (possibly Red Lake County) not making another big run next year.
Congratulations to Mike Gullingsrud on his first trip to the state tournament and winning a title. Also a big congratulations to assistant coaches Gary Cassavan, Cole Larson and Robbie Glass. What a group of guys and of course congratulations to the team and especially the group of seniors (Brock Knott, Brock Seeger, and Owen Chervestad). The seniors only had three or four wins their freshman season and look at where they ended their careers!!!!
Also a huge congratulations to the communities of Red Lake Falls, Plummer, and Oklee on the honor and the tremendous crowd support they gave the team throughout the playoffs. It was amazing!

JOKES
A man called to testify at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), asked his accountant for advice on what to wear.
“Wear your shabbiest clothing. Let him think you are a pauper,” the accountant replied.
Then he asked his lawyer the same question, but got the opposite advice. “Do not let them intimidate you. Wear your most elegant suit and tie.”
Confused, the man went to his Priest, told him of the conflicting advice, and requested some resolution of the dilemma.”Let me tell you a story,” replied the Priest.
“A woman, about to be married, asked her mother what to wear on her wedding night. ‘Wear a heavy, long, flannel nightgown that goes right up to your neck.’ But when she asked her best friend, she got conflicting advice. Wear your most sexy negligee, with a V neck right down to your navel.”
The man protested: “What does all this have to do with my problem with the IRS?!”
“Simple”, replied the Priest…
“It doesn’t matter what you wear, you are going to get screwed!”

A young woman was preparing for her wedding. She asked her mother to go out and buy a nice long black negligee and carefully place it in her suitcase so it would not wrinkle. Well, Mom forgot until the last minute. So she dashed out and could only find a short pink nighty. She bought it and threw it into the suitcase.
After the wedding the bride and groom enter their hotel room. The groom was a little self-conscious so he asked his new bride to change in the bathroom and promise not to peek while he got ready for bed. While she was in the bathroom, the bride opened her suitcase and saw the negligee her mother had thrown in there. She exclaimed, “Oh no! It’s short, pink, and wrinkled!”
Then her groom cried out, “I told you not to peek!”

A guy goes over to his friends house, rings the bell.
The wife answers the door.
“Hi, is Tony home?”
“No, he went to the store.”
“Well, you mind if I wait?”
“No come in.”
They sit down and the friend says, “You know Sara, you have the greatest breasts I have ever seen. I’d give you a hundred bucks if I could just see one.”
Sara thinks about this for a second and figures what the hell – a hundred bucks. She opens her robe and shows one. He promptly thanks her and throws a 100 bucks on the table.
They sit there a while longer and Chris says, “They are so beautiful I’ve got to see the both of them. I’ll give you another 100 bucks if I could just see the both of them together.”
Sara thinks about this and says what the hell opens her robe and gives Chris a nice long look. Chris thanks her and throws another 100 bucks on the table then says he can’t wait any longer for Tony and leaves.
A while later Tony arrives home and his wife says, “You know, your weird friend Chris came over.”
Tony thinks about this for a second and says, “Well, did he drop off the 200 bucks he owes me?”
